Chapter thirteen
Avery
I turned away from Jonah hoping to God that he didn't see the tears well up in my eyes. I had become such a crying mess around this guy. It was ridiculous. After all the crap with Aaron, I had never really cried. Upsets and fear had become such a regular part of my life back then that I had grown almost numb to them in a strange way. Jonah seemed to inspire all these new emotions and while I enjoyed some of them thoroughly, I couldn't say that I missed tears. It felt like my heart was breaking all over again every time I was around him. I just didn't know how I was going to survive this class with him, but I knew that I didn't have much of a choice.
The last couple of days I'd spent so much time trying to not think about Jonah, but also trying to get together a new place to live, plus working my shifts at the bar, I hadn't been sleeping that much. That's what I attributed to my dizzy spells in the classroom to. All the same, I would follow through with what I promised Jonah and I would go to the doctor to get seen. I wasn't worried so much for me, but for our baby.
I got out of the classroom and away from Jonah as quickly as I could. I was grateful to see out of the side of my eye that he had turned away as soon as I had told him that enough was enough. Maybe now he would get the hint and start treating me the way he treated his other students.
As I walked through the corridor and rounded the corner, I almost ran smack into Laurie. She glared at me, even as she gave me this funny smile, âwell, that was quite a performance. I have to applaud to you. It's almost as good as something that I would pull off,â Laurie said with a snarky smile. I furrowed my eyebrow, clearly confused, âwhat are you talking about?â
She laughed, âoh, come on, you can drop the act with me. I see the way you look at Professor Finn. I can't blame you, he is quite the tasty little morsel isn't he?â
I felt something turn over in my stomach at the way she described him. While I couldn't disagree that Jonah was gorgeous, facts were facts after all, there was something in her tone that soured my stomach even more than it already was. âI really don't know what you're talking about,â I said it as I started to turn away.
She put her hand on my elbow, stopping me, âI don't know what kind of game that you're playing Avery Shaw,â she said, drawing out my name in a sinister tone, âI just wanted to give you a friendly warning that whatever it is, it's not going to work. The poor little blonde girl act may work for other men, but Professor Finn is much too smart for that.
